Governors Islandt least in the early 1990's there was a group of Bicolano teenagers (affectionately known as the "GI guys") living on Governors Island whose parents had settled there as members of the Coast Guard and, in the case of one family, a judge. The Philippines, as a former colony of the US, had a long relationship with the US military, and many Filipinos joined the US Navy after WWII in exchange for citizenship, presumably resulting in the disproportionate number of Filipino families on Governors Island. After the island was decommissioned as a military installation in the 1990s, all these families were forced to leave.
