The first wave of Koreans in New York consisted largely of students, Protestants, and refugees from the Japanese occupation of Korea, some of whom formed the city's first Korean church in Morningside Heights in 1920 to organize anti-Japanese movements. By the second half of the 20th century, Koreans had expanded throughout the city, with eastern Queens the center of the community and Palisades Park in New Jersey a fast-growing secondary hub.

anhattan's "K-Town", boxed between 32nd and 35th streets around Broadway and 5th Ave, originated in the late 1970s as a home for textile workers and apparel wholesalers seeking cheap rent. Over the decades, the neighborhood has become popular amongst second-generation Koreans and young people more broadly. In the style of Korea's own urban centers, K-town hosts different restaurants, karaoke bars, and shops on different floors of the same building.

An urban language map

Welcome to Languages of New York City, a free and interactive digital map of the world’s most linguistically diverse metropolitan area.

All data, unless otherwise specified, is from the Endangered Language Alliance (ELA), based on information from communities, speakers, and other sources.

The map is a work in progress and a partial snapshot, focused on significant sites for Indigenous, minority, and endangered languages. Larger languages are represented selectively. To protect the privacy of speakers, some locations are slightly altered. Social media users, note that LANGUAGEMAP.NYC works best in a separate browser. We apologize that the map may not be fully accessible to all users, including the visually impaired.
