NoMadhough no established community of speakers or focal point has been reported, individual Māori speakers from Aotearoa (New Zealand) have called New York City home for extended periods. Māori leaders and cultural figures — recently including songwriter Ataahua Papa and dancer, choreographer, and scholar Jack Gray — periodically visit the city for events at the United Nations, local universities, and arts institutions. In 2012, for example, the "Language Revitalization in the 21st Century", co-hosted by the Endangered Language Alliance at the CUNY Graduate Center, was led by a delegate of prominent Māori speakers and activists.
