Community Profile: Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, and Montenegrin — linguistically close and grouped together as Serbo-Croatian during the time of the former Republic of Yugoslavia (though using different writing systems) — are spoken by a number of substantially separate communities of Serbs, Croats, Montenegrins, and Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) across the five boroughs. Though earlier clusters existed, many arrived in the city in the mid-1990s fleeing war. Many of the city's ethnic Albanians have roots in Montenegro, Kosovo, and elsewhere in the former Yugoslavia and speak the closely realted south Slavic varieties Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, or Montenegrin as a result.

he Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sava in Manhattan has been a nerve center of the community since 1942, but most Serbian speakers live in Queens. According to one community member, Serbians in Astoria come primarily from the south of the country, whereas the community around Ridgewood and Glendale (which gathers at the Serbian Association of New York building) is more heavily from Belgrade and the surrounding area. The Holy Ascension Serbian Orthodox Church is a religious institution for Serbians in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Welcome to Languages of New York City, a free and interactive digital map of the world’s most linguistically diverse metropolitan area.

All data, unless otherwise specified, is from the Endangered Language Alliance (ELA), based on information from communities, speakers, and other sources.

The map is a work in progress and a partial snapshot, focused on significant sites for Indigenous, minority, and endangered languages. Larger languages are represented selectively.
